Ian is an 18-year member of the Strathcona County Emergency Services (SCES) and a lieutenant firefighter/paramedic. He has over 20 years of experience in emergency services and has been involved in PEER Support and CISM throughout his career. Currently, Ian sits on the SCES PEER support team as a co-coordinator and is a member of the Alberta Critical Incident Stress Management Provincial Network (ABCISM). Ian is the Fire Program Coordinator at Emergency Services Academy in Sherwood Park Alberta and a Trustee with the Strathcona Firefighters Association Local 2461. He advocates for a collaborative union, management and HR approach to PEER support and is passionate about a system that allows options for first responders. Ian champions acceptance and cultural tolerance for mental health in emergency services.
Session: A Collaborative Approach to Mental Health in an Integrated (Fire-EMS) Department: A Case Example
Description: A successful and sustainable mental health program requires collaboration among key groups such as union representatives, management, third party providers/insurance carriers and medical professionals. This session will review the challenges and successes experienced over a six-year time frame (2012-present) within Strathcona County Emergency Services (SCES), an integrated Fire-EMS department, in their ongoing efforts to implement best practices and to support the health and well-being of their members.
